Classes Starting- Here's What You Can Expect

I love the beginning of new semester!!! It’s always so full of promise. It’s exciting, and sometimes a little nerve-wracking! As a parent, my first school week is best categorized by running about 5 minutes late to EVERYTHING and at least one drive-through meal because I forgot how long it takes to get somewhere. Many of our 2e kiddos need more support starting something new. The unknown can feel so anxiety-provoking!

Do you know what helps me most with difficult transitions? Knowing exactly what to expect!

In hopes that this will help your family, too, we want to make sure you know exactly what happens from the moment that you register for class to the beginning of the course.

This way, you know that if you haven’t had this happen, then you can reach out so we can make sure you are getting the support you need!

The biggest thing we strive for at YSA is a sense of community: You’re a part of our Virtual Village Now! We are all here together! So if you need help at any time, reach out to us!

Email: support@youngscholarsacademy.org

Here’s what you can expect:

Communication Timeline

  • Right after enrollment – You will receive 2 things: A welcome email from Mr. Sam and a receipt from our enrollment system, Active. The Welcome Email will include any supplies you may need, the zoom link for the class, as well as the dates and times of the class.

  • 4 days prior to the semester kicking off – Information Email. Mr. Sam and the team will reach out with an email that will include an invitation to join our VIP Villager Members Only page! This page is password-protected and only enrolled families will be able to access all the amazing support on the inside! It will also have any important dates for the semester including VIP events. ** password will be included in your information email

  • Days leading up to class – Additional information emails. These emails will include any additional information you may need to know. For example, some classes include a Google classroom, so an invitation to the classroom may be in these emails. Be sure to accept the invitation and take a peek inside the Google classrooms and have a look around. This is a great chance to add the classes and zoom links to your calendar. So that you are prepared for each class meeting.

Scroll to the bottom of your confirmation email and click this link.

You can also check out these videos on adding an event to your Gmail Calendar or Outlook Calendar or IPhone Calendar.

⏰ TIME MANAGEMENT OPPORTUNITY: If you have older children that you want to be in charge of their own calendars you can share the events with them while still monitoring.

  • First 5 weeks of classes - Class reminder emails - You’ll receive these for the that a class meets to get you and your child used to the schedule. These emails will include anything important for that day’s class.

  • Weekly – Student progress emails. Teachers will send a personalized update about your classes each Friday to make sure you stay on top of what is happening in class.

  • Each Friday – YSA Village Voice Newsletter. YSA mentors will share class updates and highlights in our school newspaper called the YSA Village Voice Newsletter. We will also include any important announcements and upcoming events so you always know what is happening at YSA.

How to access information in the Virtual Village

The moment you join our classes, you are part of our family and that comes with all kinds of perks! This means that you get access to all of the perks of our community. These perks include community events, demo classes, and free resources like expert talks.

Members of our Virtual Village also have priority enrollment for next semester! You get to sign up for the classes your child dreams of before they open to the public!

The best part is that you get access to the VIP Villager Members Only page! This page is password-protected and only enrolled families will be able to access all the amazing support on the inside! It will also have any important dates for the semester including VIP events.

Friendship Social Club

Families that have signed up for two classes or more also get access to our free homeroom social club. This is a place for our learners to connect with other 2e kids like them.

Student Showcase

This year, we are going to bring our families more into the passions of their learners through our Student Showcase. Students will have a chance to explain what they’re doing in their classes and what they’re learning. As our school community grows, we want you to be a part of it. Parents will also receive issues of our virtual school newspaper, which will include updates about events and information about classes.

Your Community

As you can see, our program is more than just one-off classes. Once you sign up, you’re not just getting classes, you’re joining a community.

You’re huddling up with your tribe around a campfire in the safety of a Virtual Village that was constructed by families just like yours, for families just like yours!

COMMON QUESTIONS

Questions Parents Ask.

Everything you need to know about Young Scholars Academy.

What is Young Scholars Academy?

YSA is a WASC-accredited virtual village for gifted, twice-exceptional, and differently-wired students ages 5–25. We offer 200+ live online courses (from Minecraft Redstone Engineering to AP Psychology to Mock Trial) with a maximum of 6–8 students per course, taught by 20 hand-selected mentor teachers who are neurodivergent themselves. We serve 1,200+ families across 47+ states and 17 countries. This is not a marketplace. It's a school and a community.

How does it work?

During Fall and Spring semesters, courses meet once a week, live on Zoom, 50 minutes per session. During Summer, camps run Monday through Friday, one week at a time. When your child enrolls in 3 or more courses, they get free access to Homeroom Social Club — a weekly gathering with a consistent group of friends. Between courses, students hang out on our virtual campus where they walk as avatars, eat lunch together, and build real friendships with kids from around the world who finally get them.

Who is this for?

Gifted, twice-exceptional, and differently-wired students, including kids with ADHD, autism, giftedness, anxiety, dyslexia, and PDA. No diagnosis required. If your child is clever, quirky, and hasn't found their people yet, they belong here. About 65% of our families homeschool. The rest use us alongside traditional or charter schools.

Is this a low-demand environment?

Yes. Enrichment courses have no grades and no traditional homework. However, for-credit courses include assignments and letter grades. Cameras always optional. Challenge by choice. Students are never cold-called, never forced to participate, and never penalized for how they choose to engage. For students with PDA, demand avoidance, or anxiety, this is the difference between a program they resist and one they ask to log into.

How much does it cost?

Semester courses start at $624. Summer camps are $149–$169 per camp. Payment plans, sibling discounts, referral credits, and ESA/charter funding accepted. We're an approved vendor with 10+ state ESA programs.

Will my child actually make friends?

This is the part that surprises parents most. Your child joins a course about something they love and meets 6–8 kids who love it too. Same group all semester (or all week for camps). Parents tell us their children are more connected with this community than with anyone physically around them. 93% of families re-enroll because their kids won't let them stop.

What if it doesn't work?

100% Satisfaction Guarantee. Switch courses, receive a credit, or stop payments. No questions asked. We can offer this because we know what happens when these kids find their people.

What do parents get?

Virtual Coffee & Connect hours every couple of weeks. Regular Expert Talks with leaders like Seth Perler, Debbie Reber, and Dr. Temple Grandin. A Facebook group where families connect and support each other. Progress updates from mentors. And the ability to watch your child's courses anytime (just stay off camera). You're not just enrolling your child. You're joining a village.
